Who Am I?

I’m Claire Potter, a history professor at The New School for Social Research and co-Executive Editor of Public Seminar. I have made it my business to write about politics for a general audience since I started my first blog, Tenured Radical, in 2006. You can find me at the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Politico, The Yale Review, AlterNet, Dissent, Eurozine, The Village Voice, Inside Higher Education, and Jacobin.

Currently, I am writing a biography of radical feminist Susan Brownmiller, so in 2022, you can soon expect more content on feminist activism and politics.

I Read Everything You Don’t Have Time to Keep Up With

I am obsessed with politics—I’ll admit it. I read political news widely, including newsletters written by journalists based in state capitols across the country. So I’ll bring things to you—books, ideas, conversations—that you mostly won’t see in the mainstream press; analysis on topics in the news; and in my “Short Takes” section, links to articles you might not otherwise see.

Some of my favorite posts from 2021 include:

Should I pay or subscribe for free?

That’s up to you: I love you anyway, whatever you decide. Every subscriber gets two posts a week, and paying subscribers receive three posts a week with bonus content and conversations. So I hope this newsletter will be so worth it to you that you want to pay what amounts to .40 a post: this helps support the work that goes into them.

Founding subscribers ($150) get a free copy of my new book, Political Junkies: From Talk Radio to Twitter, How Alternative Media Hooked Us on Politics and Broke Our Democracy (Basic Books, 2020).
