Hey, Neil fans: I’m sorry to say that our favorite historian of gay Republicans is off today, but he’ll be back next week. Meanwhile, you are stuck with me.
We are 10 days out from the election and and I have never seen one so scary close. Looking at 538.com, I’m seeing:
Wisconsin, Nevada, Pennsylvania: tied.
North Carolina, Georgia, and Nevada: Trump +1
Michigan: Harris +1
However, remember these are polling averages—not hard numbers, or even actual polls in and of themselves. Instead, as I explain in greater length in the video, they are a poll product, the outcome of several recent, reputable polls being smushed together in such a way that they theoretically balance out each others’ sampling errors. For example, a recent Marist poll gave Harris a five-point national lead: nowhere does 538’s averaging technique reflect that lead—in fact, nationally, the site gives her only a 1.4% lead. So obviously, polls are swinging favorably and less favorably for Harris, and it’s hard to know where voters actually are.
But I think Kamala Harris is going to win, and this is why. Here’s a preview of today’s video chat:
