Claire this was a good article well researched and thought out. As a gun owner I could support this with some minor tweaks, such as lower the age for hunting and practice to 10 maybe 12. Many rural location allow those supervised to hunt at that age. Also we had a rifle team when I was growing up in the high school we had real guns and a rifle range in the basement of the school. In NY. That was finally dismantled by the anti gun left sometime in the 90’s those should return to teach safety and foster competition between schools, but I doubt that can happen. I see the right litigating any and all restrictions. Soon The Supreme Court will rule on the NY rifle and pistol club case and the shall issue vs May issue permit case. NY state and NY City will most probably loose and more permits will have to be issued more not less weapons will be in the hands of people who may or may not know what they are doing. I spend over 20 years in the military so without weapons handling being second nature accidents will happen, children must be made to understand weapons are not video games once your dead their is no reset button. I do not see this as a government issue function you cannot legislate yourself out of this problem with yet more unconstitutional laws, this is a culture issue and we need to teach this in the home and on the schools, how weapons work and how to be safe handling them and the proper use of them. This is not a game it serious and final.
