Excellent commentary with some illuminating and hence helpful “both sidism.” For what is worth I have a liberal lawyer friend who is an expert observer of trials and followed this one closely. She says that if she were on the jury she would have voted to acquit given the charges and Wisconsin law. I trust her judgment.
Excellent piece, Claire. I've been amazed by the number of crazy comment, it's like twitter has been on an endless loop of @badlegaltakes - many from people who ought to have known better, and who would have quickly criticised others for not bothering to do the slightest bit of research about the case.

It's not so clear to me that Wisconsin's laws are to blame. Women and girls who are battered are not conspicuously successful in using self defense laws against their abusers. It seems that's a defense that's for white men. Here's a case, for example, from Kenosha: https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/06/03/chrystul-kizer-sex-trafficking-appeal/?fbclid=IwAR11uR82Dd2ShPykEU136t3HXRaG9AjHWA-xTfq_Phn9MXXzSxLd0lBxWgw
