It is most interesting to me how the related acts of delusion and mendaciousness function in the tale. Being gay until very recently in this country meant having to lie all the time just to get along, both within families and in society at large. It is not surprising perhaps that dissembling would be an almost knee-jerk reaction to any threat to their hard-fought-for family.
