As the Covid-19 pandemic subsides across the United States it feels as if we as a society- a nation- are in a sort of post-traumatic period of frivolity- and certainly deserve it. However the Party of Trump has not paused for a nanosecond to smell the roses. It/They continue with a fervor at all levels of government to weaken democratic standards and institutions as Claire points out with precision. I'm worried that the fix is in already: the advances made since the Biden Administration brought competency to Washington is looking dead in the water come the 2022 midterm elections. Time is not our ally.

The most important person in the world right now is Senator Joe Manchin. He is so deeply embedded in his bipartisan rabbit hole of denial regarding the necessity of ditching the filibuster, and without him the Party of Trump has already set in place election reforms that will neuter the President's ability to pass his aggressive agenda before the 118th Congress is sworn in 2023. We have one year and change to pressure Joe Manchin- which is to say, give him cover so that he can pivot away from the extreme corner into which he has painted himself and thereby the future of our democracy.
